THE PROJECT
WordPress magazine, community, and live event platform that sparked our agency.
GEEKPR0N is the project that started it all. What began as a passion project grew into one of Canada’s most recognized geek and pop culture publications and eventually became the foundation that Be Loud Media was built on.
The goal was never just to launch a blog. It was to create a community-driven platform that combined editorial content, events, and culture in a way that felt inclusive, bold, and unmistakably different.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Building a media platform, not just a website
GEEKPR0N was designed to unite geeks and nerds across Canada and beyond through thoughtful editorial, reviews, cosplay coverage, and live events. A key differentiator from the start was its perspective. It launched as an entirely female-run publication in a male-dominated space, where credibility came from knowledge and skill, not gatekeeping.
1.
The Challenge
There was no template for what GEEKPR0N wanted to become. The platform needed to support high-volume publishing, community growth, monetization, and live events while remaining flexible enough to evolve with culture and audience expectations.
2.
Our Approach
We treated the site as a media platform from day one. The design leaned into an 8-bit aesthetic paired with a futuristic, dystopian type style inspired by retro sci-fi propaganda, creating a visual identity that carried across the website, social channels, and live event broadcasts.
Under the hood, everything was built to scale.
3.
The Solution
A custom WordPress publishing platform featuring traffic payout plugins, custom dashboard reporting, enhanced author profiles, and editorial tooling designed for high-volume content creation.
This was one of the first magazine sites we built on our managed WordPress platform and directly led to the formation of our development business.
4.
Results
GEEKPR0N grew into a nationally recognized platform with:
- 300k monthly reach
- 160k monthly readers
- 2,700+ published articles
- Multiple sold-out live events
At its peak, it was ranked the third largest geek blog in Canada by the National Post.
This project reflects our roots in WordPress web design and development, publishing platforms, and building communities that scale.
